But... I kinda like the idea of a Ranger. What would I look for in terms of warning signs and things? I feel like I could convince my S/O this was a good idea
$14K, 4WD, 101,000km (61,000 miles).
I got BIG DREAMS YO. I would trade in my Kia that has an 8 year/85,000km advantage on it. I really, really want a functional tiny 4wd.

Small 4WD? You need a Jimmy.

Yeah? I should look at those. My main criteria are 1) reliable, 2) clean and 3) aftermarket support.

1) It’s a GM product, so it’ll run like shit forever.
2) 50/50
3) Yes

hmmm. I still prefer a ranger. I have GM bias, but I will check them out

That is an absurd price (I know the market for these is crazy) and my family has had a few of these and they have all been little pieces of shit. Rusted through shock towers, multiple transmissions, constant suspensions parts replacement, leaky everything and power steering issues. One was a retired public works truck and I don’t know the other’s maintenance history in their defence. I really do like the Ranger, and I was shopping for one for awhile, but if it weren’t for the fact they have a monopoly on the truly small truck market I think these would always filter to the bottom of my choices. Maybe look into a Frontier? You could likely get a newer one for the same price but idk about 4WD

Keep in mind thats $CAD, so not so crazy, but I get what you’re saying.

My Ranger was pretty crappy. It had a ton of problems and it only had 93,000 miles upon trade-in.

Oops, you said Jimmy.. I still support a Jimny..

My ‘94 was still running at 269k miles when I parked it. I wore out two clutches, two distributors, and had to rebuild the transmission at 135k due to a failed rubber plug on an inspection port. The front end tie rods gave up at ~250k. I did an intake and radiator replacement around the same. The window regulators gave up around 200k. Other than that, it’s been a solid truck. Don’t be put off by the 3.0. It will run, and run, and run, and run....

Nope, I said Jimmy.

I love Rangers , but the autos in these are not terribly strong. I would definitely go stick and 4.0, 4x4 (good luck). The 3.0 is fine... It’s fine!... Just as long as you have nowhere to be.
Other things that go bad: ball joints, starters, ignitions, power steering pump. Just the usual Ferd stuff. Don’t get a high-mileage one if you don’t have to.

My grandparents have an 03 XLT 2wd auto 3.0, it’s been great for them for the past 15? years. Although theirs only has 53k miles on it, so it’s not like it’s been pushed that hard.

When do we attach Canadian flags to our usernames so that Americans finally realize we’re Canadian?
(Just kidding we’d still get “wow, that’s a terrible price!” all the time)

I live in the People’s Republic of Ontario so I’m familiar with our lame loonie. Still crazy! But when there are 0 other options for small trucks and the Ranger has the FERD TRCUk brand association behind it I see how dealers can ask this, and they are very cool. I’m also not sure if it being manual is a requirement which further complicates things

A Jimmy would be easier on price and parts availability. A Jimny would be cool in a forbidden fruit kind of way..

I would rather drive a Kia. Any Kia. Of any era.
You’ve already made it big time. Grass ain’t always greener.

The 2004 Ranger has been, is, and will always be my favorite car ever.
I wholeheartedly approve of any Ranger decisions.
Bonus points if 2004 Edge SuperCab 3.0 V6 5MT in red.

That one looks nice, but I think way way overpriced, even with Loonie bucks. I bought my 07 for $900. Yes, rust, 220,000 miles, no A/C, manual windows, no power assist steering, manual gearbox, 2wd, slow as molasses , but the motor and transmission show no signs of wear or distress, the frame will turn to iron oxide long before it ever stops running.
If you want to buy this one https://desmoines.craigslist.org/cto/d/martensdale-2001-ford-ranger-4x4-sc/6999006118.html and save $ 10,000 I will split the difference with you and drive it up to you for $5000 because I am a nice guy.

Nice price but drive it before you buy. These thinks are ancient by today’s standards.

I always forget. Keep in mind rust is less of an issue on the best coast

This one is a stick

I sold my low mileage ranger for chump change comparatively!

It is 4.0. 2008 was last year for the 3.0.
![]() 10/15/2019 at 21:52 |

is that bad?
![]() 10/15/2019 at 22:05 |

4.0 is more preferred engine, more reliable, more aftermarket support, more horsepower and torque, both v6s have similar fuel economy.
![]() 10/15/2019 at 22:08 |
|
Should I go look at it lol
![]() 10/15/2019 at 22:27 |

Sure its worth a look, you can even test drive it. But you already have 4 cars do you want a fifth?
![]() 10/15/2019 at 22:30 |

I’d trade the kia in on it.
YOLO
